Pilates takes its name from its founder, Joseph Pilates. Pilates developed his techniques in the early 20th Century, firstly to overcome his own ailments as a child - he suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever - and then to help his fellow camp mates when he was interned as a German enemy alien by the British during the First World War. In 1926, Pilates emigrated to America and set-up a studio in New York, where he refined the Pilates method.
Pilates is a type of body-conditioning. It is a low impact form of exercise that everyone can do and benefit from. It teaches you how to move well and focus on the present moment. It strengthens and rebalances the underlying muscular and structural systems of the body, resulting in better movement patterns and athletic performance, the reduction of pain and tension, improved posture and an increased sense of well-being.

I started practising Pilates in 2011 after suffering from a knee injury due to running. While I quickly fell out of the habit of running, I continued to practise Pilates regularly as I found it had many benefits beyond just rehab for my injury. I truly believe that everyone can benefit from practising Pilates and learning more about how to move well. That’s why, in 2020, I trained with Body Control Pilates® to qualify as a Matwork Level 3 Teacher.
As a member of the Body Control Pilates® Association, I am committed to continuing my professional development and I regularly attend workshops and courses to further my knowledge of anatomy and Pilates. I'm also a qualified first aider.
I founded Horizon Pilates because I want to help others experience the benefits of a regular Pilates practice, particularly people who would not ordinarily be able to access Pilates classes.
If you provide a service to members of the community that you think may benefit from Pilates but that would not usually be able to afford or access classes then please contact me at rachael@horizonpilates.co.uk to discuss what Horizon Pilates can offer.
